Description

How did the Pompeians live? What were their vices and habits? How did they die and how many may have survived? We will try to answer these questions as we walk the streets of the city, entering what remains of the homes of the wealthiest and the stores, retracing their steps and perhaps being moved by the sight of the powerful snapshot of the last moments of their lives: the casts of their bodies.

Having exited through one of the gates of the ancient city that led into the then countryside, walking among the tombs of Pompeians, we will arrive at Villa dei Misteri, leaving the ancient city after admiring among Pompeii’s most beautiful frescoes.

Where can I buy Pompeii tickets?

Tickets can be purchased at the official excavation ticket offices found at the entrances. At the info points near the ticket offices you can pick up a free map of the site.

Because of the long lines it is preferable, with a small plus of 1€ for booking, to buy tickets online on the TicketOne website https://www.ticketone.it/artist/scavi-pompei/parco-archeologico-di-pompei-ingresso-giornaliero-988882/

For safety reasons, tickets will be named; staff may conduct verification by requesting identification

How to get to Pompeii?

There are three official entrances to the site:

  • Porta Marina Superiore (Via Villa dei Misteri, 2, 80045 Pompei NA)
  • Piazza Esedra - Porta Marina Inferiore (Piazza Esedra)

These two entrances are a 5-minute walk from each other.

The easiest way to reach the excavations area is to take a train or come by car by parking in one of the parking lots you will find nearby.

How to get to the Pompeii excavations by train?

To get to Porta Marina Superiore and Piazza Esedra, the nearest train stop is the Circumvesuviana Naples-Sorrento Line with a stop at Pompeii Villa dei Misteri.

 

To get to Piazza Anfiteatro you could take the Circumvesuviana Naples-Poggiomarino Line with a stop at Pompei Santuario if you are staying in a town along the train route, or preferably the FS Trenitalia train Naples-Salerno Line (stop Pompei). Once in Pompeii, it is possible to reach the other two entrances by taking the Pompeii Link bus, parked in front of the station, which stops near Piazza Esedra. The ticket can be purchased on Trenitalia's website in one go by specifying "Pompeii Scavi" as the destination.

How to get to the Pompeii excavations by car?

Drive through Autostrada A3 Napoli-Salerno and take the Pompei Scavi exit: you will arrive in the Piazza Esedra area and find many parking lots near all the main entrances.

How much is the Pompeii ticket?

Pompeii Express 18€ 

This route excludes Villa of the Mysteries and Villa of Diomede.

Where can I get a paper map of the Pompeii excavations?

All entrances have an info point where you can request free official site maps.

Who can enter the Pompeii excavations for free?

The ticket is free for visitors under the age of 18 or for disabled persons and a family member: certification may be required to prove actual disability.

For members of the European community aged between 18 and 24, the ticket is reduced and costs 2 euros.

What clothing to wear to visit Pompeii excavations ?

Obviously, it depends on the season! Starting from June it is very hot, put on light clothes, comfortable shoes and don't forget water: you will be dripping with sweat and you will need to hydrate. There are several drinking fountains in the excavations area from which you can fill your water bottles or flasks for free.

Is the visit to the Lupanare (Pompeii excavations) part of the tour itinerary?

I wish! I know it is probably the most famous and most visited place in Pompeii. It depends on how many people are in line: I won't waste half an hour (and very often it happens that this is the waiting time) of the tour queuing in an alley for 5 little erotic pictures in a tiny building but I promise that if the line is short I will take you there.

At the end of the Pompeii tour can I continue exploring the site on my own?

Of course! ticket is valid all day until closing time. There is surveillance at night. The excavations are dotted with cameras. Don't even think about staying inside. Then they say there are ghosts....

Is it possible to bring food into the Pompeii excavations?

The answer is yes but not everywhere.To eat there are specific eating areas indicated on the official site map that you can pick up for free at the ticket booth info points. There are also two cafes inside the excavations where you can buy food and drinks as well as restrooms all marked on the map. Please: just about everywhere you will find special bins for sorted waste: HELP US KEEP POMPEI CLEAN!

Is the Pomepii tour suitable for people with wheelchairs?

For visitors in wheelchairs, there is a special barrier-free route departing from Amphitheater Square, with the possibility of returning to Amphitheater Square to exit or possibly exiting Exedra Square, using the elevator of the Antiquarium of Pompeii, which is located nearby the Forum.
